One of my favorite writers, Bret Easton Ellis, has taken to twitter to voice that he thinks that fan favorite Matt Bomer is not fit to star as Christian Grey in the movie version of the hit book 50 Shades of Grey, seeing as though the actor is gay.

He later said that it’s about Matt “not being right for the role” but he did earlier say that him being married to a man in his personal life complicates things. Then even later (the tweet on top) he stopped flip flopping around and just came out and said it. He doesn’t think he is right for the role because of his sexuality.

I personally think that sexuality should not matter. This is exactly why some closeted gay actors are afraid to come out: because they are afraid of losing roles. So if Matt were to lose this role (even tho it’s just in heresay right now) it would just reinforce the fact that gay actors do lose roles and aren’t treated equally. I think someone’s personal life/sexuality that shouldn’t even be our business in the first place should not affect any type of hiring whatsoever, cinema or otherwise.

What are your thoughts on it?

I am completely appalled by this – since when did the sexual orientation of an actor define if they would be a good choice for a role or not. I mean, so its O.K for a straight actor to pretend he is attracted to men for not for a gay actor to pretend he is attracted to women?  Also – his comment about Matt being “totally gay” in White Collar is bullshit – when watching the show I am watching Neal Caffrey, a womanizer who charms women – not Matt Bomer.  Never once have I been watching the show and though, “Oh, look at Matt checking that guy out” because when Matt is acting he is his character and you can see that.

This author is nothing but a homophobic prick.

May I remind everyone that this is the same person who said watching Chris Colfer felt like a puddle of HIV and Glee/Chris gave him HIV?

He’s a homophobic disgusting piece of shit and therefore I am obligated to disagree with him on principle.

However – I fail to see how Matt’s sexuality has an impact on his ability to play opposite that. You know, seeing as the point of acting is to put on an act and become what you are not. Does Bret think that, for example, Christian Bale was a poor choice for the lead character in the adaption of American Psycho because Christian Bale’s not a killer? Does he have issues with Andrew Garfield – someone who was (Bret might might be shocked to hear this, so I hope he’s sitting down!) not bitten by a radioactive spider and given superpowers through it – playing Spider-man? Or does he think that sexuality is the one thing that is constant? That gay can’t play straight, straight can’t play gay, and everyone else is fucked?

Mostly I think he’s just a homophobic douchefuck, though.

Wow, I didn’t know about the other tweets. I am not a fan of Chris Colfer or Glee but those remarks were ugly and disgusting.

What do you think?
